Fulbright Association
Arts Task Force

Fall 2002 Arts Task Force Update

The Fulbright Arts Task Force held its annual “Sharing Session” on Thursday evening, October 10, 2002 at the Madison Hotel in Washington, D.C. It was part of the Fulbright Association 25th Annual Conference, the meeting was conducted by Elmer Craig, his co-chair, Divya Kumar was present and 15 other Arts Task Force members were also present. In his opening remarks, Elmer asked the members to communicate with one another during the year and to come up with ideas that would help build the Task Force in to an even more viable organization.

There were four presenters for the evening; (1.) Nick DeVries, who showed slides of his successful efforts to build continuing relationships between faculty, students and the institution where he spent his 1995 Fulbright in Slovakia, (2.) Matthew Lyberg, who talked about his recent research, and showed photographs of his documentation of Catholic Monasteries in the Ukraine, (3.) Wajuppa Tossa is a Story Teller and she delighted the audience with tales from her experiences with children, and (4.) Julia May sang the evening to a successful conclusion.

After the presentations, the group brainstormed ideas that would allow us all to become more active as individuals in the task force, how we could develop ways that would provide more exposure for the membership and Elmer challenged the individuals to make some of those ideas expressed, become reality in the coming year.

The Arts Task Force enables all members to exchange information and ideas about previous and ongoing projects, artistic events in various countries, and creative and theoretical information related to their fields. The task force provides an opportunity for Fulbrighters in the arts to increase their involvement with educational and cultural exchanges and to further the exchange of information between Fulbright artists in the United States and those in other countries in order to provide a base of support for Fulbright arts programs. Elmer Craig and Divya Kumar are co-chairs of the task force and they can be reached at efcraig@bellsouth.net or divyakumar@wordsoundaction.org. There is also an Arts Task Force listserv and you can post information, ask questions and make contact by sending an e-mail message to fulbrightatf-owner@yahoogroups.com.
