January 2004

Dear Fulbrighters & Friends:

Since 1993 when the Fulbright Association honored Nelson Mandela with the first Fulbright Prize (before he was selected as one of that year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureates), the J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding has been one of this Association’s most significant initiatives.  The quality of the program rests on the nominations received from our members and from the public.  Thus, we strongly encourage you to submit a nomination for the 2004 Fulbright Prize and to invite others to make nominations as well.  The prize recognizes outstanding contributions to bringing peoples, cultures, and nations to a better understanding of others.  Individuals, teams, and organizations in any field may be nominated.  The $50,000 prize is funded by a grant from The Coca-Cola Foundation.

In addition to former South African President Nelson Mandela, the Fulbright Prize has honored former U.S. President Jimmy Carter (1994), former Austrian Federal Chancellor Franz Vranitzky (1995), former Philippine President Corazon C. Aquino (1996), former President of the Czech Republic Václav Havel (1997), former Chilean President Patricio Aylwin Azócar (1998), former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson (1999), former President of Finland Martti Ahtisaari (2000), United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan (2001), former United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Sadako Ogata (2002), and former President of Brazil Fernando Henrique Cardoso (2003).

Although previous laureates are known primarily for their work in politics, diplomacy, or international relations, the Fulbright Prize may also be awarded to recognize achievements that have promoted international understanding through other fields, such as the arts or sciences.   Please visit www.fulbright.org/prize on the Association web site for more information.

To make nominations, please review the criteria and complete a nomination form.  Please do not arrange to have multiple nominations submitted for your candidate.  One nomination per nominee insures consideration.  However, you may make nominations for more than one candidate, using a separate form for each.  You may also request to have your name held in confidence.  If you have submitted a nomination before and would like it reactivated, please send a letter to this effect, with any new supporting materials you would like to include. Self-nominations are discouraged.  Nominations on line, by e-mail, fax, or mail should be received by the Fulbright Association no later than March 1, 2004.

An international Selection Committee whose members’ identities will be confidential until the laureate is announced chooses the Fulbright Prize laureate.  The committee’s work is kept confidential to ensure the integrity of the selection process.  As we work together to advance Fulbright Program ideals of mutual understanding among peoples, we hope you will take the important step of making a nomination for the 2004 Fulbright Prize.

                                                                                    Yours truly,

                                                                                    Jane L. Anderson, CAE

                                                                                    Executive Director
