Jules Maidoff (Italy 1956), a founder and past director of Studio Art Centers International (SACI) in Florence, served as juror.  He said that the experience of being abroad on a Fulbright grant, while expressed variously in the artists’ work, was an organizing principle for the exhibition.  Artists and works selected follow.

“I perceive the effect of their time as Fulbright grantees in these works.  I find it expressed in so many various and unique ways,” said Mr. Maidoff. “Implicit in much of  the work is the resonance of encounters the artists have had with people, with ways of living differently than their own which enabled them to broaden and question the solutions they had already in their arsenal of art concepts.  It [affected] them as total person and forced them to question their already acquired set of criteria and values.

The Fulbright Program, created in 1946 by legislation introduced by then Senator J. William Fulbright, promotes mutual understanding among the people of the United States and the people of other nations through the exchanges of students, teachers, scholars, and professionals.  Approximately 267,500 Fulbright grants have been awarded for exchanges between the people of the United States and people from over 160 countries.

Bridging Cultures Through Art will run in conjunction with the Fulbright Association’s 29th Annual Conference, “Fulbright Alumni:  Expressions in Civil Society,” November 3 through 5, and the Moroccan Fulbright Alumni Association conference, “Morocco in Western Art,” November 6 and 7.
