Oakland University Joins Fulbright Association
as Institutional Member Oakland University
Committed to International Education
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Aug. 28, 2006)—Oakland University (OU) became the newest
Fulbright Association institutional member yesterday, joining the ranks of more
than 165 institutions of higher education and internationally focused nonprofit
organizations dedicated to the promotion of international education.
“We
are pleased with this partnership with the Fulbright Association, an institution
that promotes active engagement in international educational and cultural
exchanges,” says Oakland’s Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
Virinder K. Moudgil, Ph.D.
OU
plays a leading role in preparing all of its students for an increasingly
diverse and interdependent world. The university recently created the
International Education Office, described by OU President Gary Russi as “a
one-stop international education center for students and [for promoting]
international faculty teaching opportunities and exchanges.”
OU
participates in a well-established consortium of study-abroad programs, which
was recently expanded to include China through the establishment of a scholar
exchange agreement with the Foreign Affairs College in Beijing.
“As a
native of Michigan, I am particularly delighted with Oakland University’s
affiliation as an institutional member,” said Jane L. Anderson, CAE, executive
director of the Fulbright Association. “The University’s new International
Allies program, which pairs an international student and a domestic student to
provide both with new cultural experiences through social events and individual
outings, shows OU’s commitment to the Fulbright Program principle of increasing
international understanding between the people of the United States and those of
our nations. We also look forward to interaction between Oakland University and
our Southeast Michigan Chapter.”
The
Fulbright Association is a private, non-profit organization that supports and
promotes the Fulbright Program, an international educational and cultural
exchange initiative created in 1946 by legislation sponsored by the late Senator
J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. There are Fulbright exchanges between the
United States and more than 150 other countries. There are more than 250,000
Fulbright alumni throughout the world. A complete roster of Fulbright
Association institutional members can be found online at
