Jules Maidoff to Serve as Juror for Fulbright Alumni Art Exhibition in
Marrakech, Morocco Fulbright Alumnus Maidoff a Founder
of Studio Art Centers International (SACI) in Florence
WASHINGTON,
D.C. (June 29, 2006)—Jules
Maidoff, Fulbright alumnus and a founder of Studio Art Centers
International, will jury Bridging Cultures through Art, the global
Fulbright alumni art exhibition to be held in Marrakech from November 5
through 7. The exhibition, to be shown at Les Atlassides Gallery, is
co-sponsored by the Moroccan Fulbright Alumni Association and the Fulbright
Association’s Arts Task Force and is one of several events being held in
Marrakech to highlight the contributions of Fulbright alumni from around the
world.
Jules Maidoff
received a Fulbright fellowship in 1956 to study painting in Florence,
Italy, during which time he had group shows at the Uffizi Loggia and
Galleria Schneider in Rome and met Louis Finklestein, Lee Bontecou, Wolf
Kahn, Emily Mason, Howard Konowitz, and Jules Kirschenbaum. Upon his return
from Italy, he pursued post graduate studies at New York University, where
he was guided by Howard Conant and Esteban Vincent.
In 1973, Mr.
Maidoff moved to Italy and began organizing summer art classes in Pian di
Scò. Two years later, he helped found and was appointed resident director
of Studio Art Centers International in Florence, a focused studio art
studies program offering U.S. university level coursework and degree
programs.
“I was and am
still convinced that art is an intellectual activity, which implies that art
education is much more than the imparting of technical expertise,” says Mr.
Maidoff. “Therefore, SACI has always been a place where
artist/intellectuals, teachers, and students gravitate and are welcomed.”
Since 1975,
Mr. Maidoff has divided his time between his studios in Florence and Pian di
Scò. He travels widely and exhibits frequently throughout Europe.
Bridging
Cultures through Art
will run in conjunction with the Fulbright Association’s 29th
Annual Conference, “Fulbright Alumni: Expressions in Civil Society,”
November 3 through 5, and the Moroccan Fulbright Alumni Association
conference, “Morocco in Western Art,” November 6 and 7.
