Senate Appropriators Fund Exchanges at $21 Million above President's Request

The Senate Appropriations Committee bill, passed by the full committee on July 29,  provides $654.277 million for State Department exchanges, $21.077 million above the President’s request and $19.277 million above the Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 level. The Senate Appropriation Committee's bill represents a significant increase over the $635 million appropriated in the House to match the enacted FY2010 funding level.  Differences in the Senate and House versions will be resolved by a conference committee. 

Call for Proposals for 2010 Selma Jeanne Cohen Dance Lecture

Alison M. Friedman spoke on the current status of modern dance in China in the context of domestic economic forces and market pressures from abroad, as well as issues of individual expression and artists' search for a 'modern Chinese' identity/voice.  
 
Her tour took her to Montreal, Canada (CINARS workshop), Scottsdale, Arizona (Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts “Destination China” series keynote), and the Asia Society of Washington DC (co-hosted by the Sidwell Friends School).

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Approves State Department Authorization

On April 27 and for the first time in five years, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed a State Department authorization bill, which contains provisions on a wide range of foreign policy issues and authorizes funding levels for State Department programs. The specific Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 and 2011 funding for the Fulbright and other programs will depend on the outcome of the appropriations process.

National Volunteer Week allows us to reflect on the extraordinary achievements of ordinary people making a difference in their communities. This year commemorates the one-year anniversary of the passage of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act and the Volunteer Generation Fund, sponsored by Fulbright alumnus Rep. Dave Loebsack (Brazil 1987, Mexico 1993). The Fulbright Association thanks Rep. Loebsack and the over 200 advocates who took action to support his amendment to the Serve America Act.

32nd Annual Conference Update

U.S. Undersecretary for Energy Kristina M. Johnson (Scotland 1991) will give the keynote address at the Fulbright Association 32nd annual conference on Oct. 30. The plenary speaker on Oct. 31 will be Krishna Guha (USA 2003), U.S. economics editor and deputy Washington bureau chief of the Financial Times.

House Passes FY10 State, Foreign Operations Bill & Defeats Cutting Amendments

On Thursday, July 9, the House passed by a vote of 318 to 106 the FY10 State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs Appropriations bill, the largest component of the International Affairs Budget. Four cutting amendments were defeated leaving intact the full $48.8 billion provided in the bill.
