Jean-Pierre Garnier
– Named Chief Executive Officer of GlaxoSmithKline in
December 2000 with the merger of SmithKline Beecham and Glaxo Wellcome, Dr.
Garnier leads one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. He holds a
doctorate in pharmacology and a master’s degree in pharmaceutical science from
the University of Louis Pasteur in France. As a Fulbright fellow, he earned a
master’s of business administration degree at Stanford University in 1974. Dr.
Garnier serves on the boards of directors of the United Technologies Corporation
and the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowships, Inc. In January 1997, he was selected
by President Chirac of France to receive the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur,
an honor created in 1802 by French Emperor Napoleon I to recognize civilian or
military accomplishments. Dr. Garnier is also recipient of the Oliver R. Grace
Award for Distinguished Service in Advancing Cancer Research.

Thomas R.
Pickering – During a diplomatic career spanning five
decades, Ambassador Pickering served as U.S. ambassador to the Russian
Federation, India, Israel, El Salvador, Nigeria and the Hashemite Kingdom of
Jordan and as ambassador and representative to the United Nations. From 1997 to
2001, he served as U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs. He held
the personal rank of Career Ambassador, the highest in the U.S. Foreign
Service. Ambassador Pickering received a bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College
in 1953 and a master’s degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at
Tufts University. As a Fulbright fellow to the University of Melbourne in
Australia, he received a second master’s degree. He is a member of the
International Institute of Strategic Studies and the Council on Foreign
Relations.

Ruth J. Simmons –
Inaugurated as the 18th president of Brown
University in July 2001, Dr. Simmons is recognized as an outstanding educator.
She served as president of Smith College from 1995 to 2001 and has also been a
member of the faculties of the University of New Orleans, California State
University Northridge, Spelman College and Princeton University. After
graduating from Dillard University, Dr. Simmons was awarded a Fulbright
fellowship to France. She earned a doctorate in romance languages and
literatures from Harvard University in 1973. She has received Harvard’s
Centennial Medal, the Medal of Distinguished Service from Columbia University
Teachers College and the National Urban League Leadership Award. In 1996, Dr.
Simmons was named Woman of the Year by CBS and by Glamour Magazine and an NBC
Nightly News Most Inspiring Woman. She serves on the boards of directors of
Goldman Sachs, Pfizer Inc. and Texas Instruments.
