New Year, New Events

Posted By Josephine Dorado, Thursday, January 10, 2013

Hi, NY Fulbrighters!

Hope everyone had a lovely holiday and Happy New Year! Now that the holiday hubbub is mostly over, there are a couple of events we wanted to tell everyone about.

1. SAVE THE DATE - Next Open Salon

Our next Fulbright NY Happy Hour & Open Salon will be Tuesday, 29 January, 6:30-8:30pm.

Our salons are opportunities to hear about each other's work by doing short presentations in an informal atmosphere, for feedback, critique or to instigate thought. We had a group of fascinating presentations at our salon in December and are looking forward to more! RSVP and/or request to be a presenter below:

2. NATIONAL COUNCIL EVENTS

The National Council on U.S. Foreign Policy is a NY-Based group that meets periodically to discuss critical foreign policy issues. The members are people with interest in this field, frequently well-known personalities. A recent meeting was led by Ambassador (Gen) Kurt Eikenberry, ex-Ambassador to Afghanistan talking about the growing influence of the military in foreign policy. Their meetings are held in private clubs with strict dress codes and are followed by receptions. We are establishing an arrangement with them under which a few members of the Fulbright NY Alumni Chapter can attend meetings free of charge. Consequently, since attendance is limited, we want to make sure that invitations go out to those people who are really interested, and RSVPs will be required (as well as an understanding that, due to capacity, some people who want to attend may have to take a rain check). If you want to be included on this mailing list, please submit your info here:

3. CHECK OUT OUR TALENTED FULBRIGHTERS

Jeremy Xido's The Angola Project at Dance New Amsterdam

Join us for a special repeat performance of Fulbrighter Jeremy Xido’s dizzying journey, dubbed by the NY Times as "marvelously quixotic…performance-lectures never stop moving, zigzagging back and forth between continents, cultures and forms...a jostling collage, one that is intimate yet informed by sweeping issues surrounding class, race and identity."
NY Times review: http://nyti.ms/ZwRGES

What: The Angola Project: Parts 1 & 2

When: Sun, January 13th.

5:00pm Part 1: Lisbon / 6:30pm Part 2: Angola

Where: Dance New Amsterdam (DNA), 280 Broadway (entrance at 53 Chambers St.), NYC

Special showcase price $5 - http://bit.ly/VV8MdX

More info: https://cabula6.jux.com/

Created by Claudia Heu, Igor Dobricic and Jeremy Xido, The Angola Project playfully straddles the worlds of performance and film-making as the audience watches a movie being constructed from fragments of film and narrative right before their eyes, only to crumble again into disarray. It is a dizzying expedition through the history of colonial Portugal, the Travelogues of Burton Holmes, the films of Bruce Lee and Jim Kelly, the Detroit race riots/rebellion, Berlin documentary film crews in Africa and the blood-thirsty mechanisms of international film finance. A funny and moving investigation into global events and the complex and often unexpected polycultural mash-up identities emerging in the 21st century.
