Fulbright
Association 36th Annual Conference: Call for Breakout Session Proposals ______________________________________________________________________
The Fulbright Association is posting
a call for breakout session proposals for its 36th Annual Conference to be
held October 3 - 6, 2013 in Washington, DC. This year, more than ever, we are
seeking breakout sessions that will bring the "wow” factor, are provocative, and leaves
attendees thirsting for more!
Guidelines:
- Breakout session proposals should fit with the
conference’s theme: "Fulbright in Action” and address how Fulbrighters,
through their work and research, are taking action to address the issues
of the day.
- For the 2013 Annual Conference, breakout
sessions will be divided into five tracks of interest. There will be
approximately 3 – 4 sessions per track spread out over two days. Breakout session
proposals should be submitted in one of the five tracks listed below:
- Business and Entrepreneurship
- Human Rights and Social Justice
- Science and Technology
- Arts and Humanities
- Global Health Policy
- As part of our ongoing Diversity
Initiative, at least one session in each of the tracks will address
an issue of diversity, with diversity being defined by race, ethnicity,
religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, income and class
disparity, and underserved regions. These sessions will be noted
specifically as Diversity Initiative content, essentially creating a track
within the other tracks.
- In order to present engaging, dynamic sessions, preference will be given to presentations given in
non-traditional formats. For example:
- Panel of no more than 3 people
addressing a unique angle on the topic which complements the other two
panelists with a clear connection to the topic;
- A debate or opposing views format where
two sides of a hot topic are discussed/debated;
- An interview format where one presenter
would have a revealing, provocative interview with an expert in their
field;
- A Pecha Kucha format where presenters
each get 20 slides and 7 minutes to deliver their piece. http://www.pechakucha.org/faq;
- Round Table Discussions.
- The proposal should not be more than one
page in length (single spaced) and should include:
- the name of the presenter(s);
- the presenter(s)’s contact info (must
include email & phone);
- the presenter(s)’s credentials and
position;
- track under which breakout session is being
submitted;
- whether the breakout session should be
considered as part of the Diversity Initiative track;
- title of breakout session;
- brief synopsis;
- stated goals of the presentation;
- proposed "take home” content and/or
suggestions for participants in terms of actionable outcomes. This
information would address an attendee’s questions of "How can I know
more?” and "What can I do to get involved?”
- Breakout sessions will be 90 minutes in length
and must include at least 30 minutes of Q&A from the audience.
- Breakout session presenters are encouraged to be
as interactive with the audience as possible.
- Proposals must outline any technology
requests for the presentation and preference for room set up (for example,
podium only, or a head table? Tables vs. theater seating? Nothing at all?).
We cannot guarantee that all requests will be honored.
- Final breakout session materials (such as a
PowerPoint) must be submitted to the Fulbright Association by Monday, September
23, 2013. Presenters must also bring their presentation with them on a
flash drive.
- Proposals may include more than one
presenter, but we cannot guarantee that breakout sessions with more than three
presenters can be accommodated.
- Please note: The Fulbright Association
is unable to provide any financial assistance for presenters including any
travel expenses, speaker fees, and waived or discounted registration fees.
All presenters will present on a pro bono basis.
Proposals
should be submitted to info@fulbright.org no later than Wednesday, June 5th, 2013 with
"2013 Breakout Session Proposal” located in the subject line. Proposals will then be
vetted by the Fulbright Association and notifications sent no later than Friday,
June 28th, 2013.
