
2002 Fulbright Lifetime Achievement Medal Recipient
Named Chief Executive Officer of GlaxoSmithKline in December 2000 with
the merger of SmithKline Beecham and Glaxo Wellcome, Dr. Garnier leads
one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. He holds a
doctorate in pharmacology and a master’s degree in pharmaceutical
science from the University of Louis Pasteur in France. As a Fulbright
fellow, he earned a master’s of business administration degree at
Stanford University in 1974. Dr. Garnier serves on the boards of
directors of the United Technologies Corporation and the Eisenhower
Exchange Fellowships, Inc. In January 1997, he was selected by
President Chirac of France to receive the Chevalier de la Légion
d’Honneur, an honor created in 1802 by French Emperor Napoleon I to
recognize civilian or military accomplishments. Dr. Garnier is also
recipient of the Oliver R. Grace Award for Distinguished Service in
Advancing Cancer Research.
